Basarios Heros

“Bas”

Overview

Description

Basarios is well built and already over six feet tall, with the sense that he still has growing to do. His hair is perpetually full of salt from sea spray, sun, and neglect. He often stands at the prow of a ship, scanning the horizon—not out of duty, but out of anticipation, as if adventure itself might crest the next wave.

His green eyes are bright and eager, though not especially calculating. Bas is enthusiastic rather than clever, driven more by instinct and emotion than strategy. He is earnest to a fault, fearless in ways that sometimes border on foolishness, and deeply convinced that greatness is something one chooses to become.

Background

The Stonebrook family is a minor noble house of Southport, long respected for its quiet influence and careful connections at the Heterland court of King Gregor XIV. Through discretion and loyalty, the Stonebrooks have secured positions throughout the kingdom—particularly in the capital city of Gaeta.

Basarios was expected to follow this tradition.

Instead, he broke it.

Where his siblings excelled in law, diplomacy, scholarship, and administration, Bas showed little aptitude for formal learning. He preferred athletic competition, reckless dares, bar brawls, and listening to old sailors’ tales. His sudden fixation on becoming a hero—someone who inspires others through action—was an ongoing embarrassment to his conservative family.

What they do not know is that his sister Elira Stonebrook secretly gave him a book that changed his life:
The Hero Journal of Lady Eleanor Sunhelm.

Inspired by the legendary paladin’s writings, Bas rejected the quiet politics of his house and took a new name: Heros (pronounced Hey–ros), an ancient word for those who rise through valor rather than birth.

A Difficult Son

Basarios is, by his own admission, a bull in a pottery stand.

His parents, Althea and Zoros Stonebrook, hope that his enlistment in the Heterland Navy will temper his recklessness and force him to grow up. At best, they imagine he might eventually settle into respectable service—perhaps as a second mate in a merchant fleet.

Bas, meanwhile, believes the sea is only the beginning.

Family: House Stonebrook

Basarios is the youngest of seven children.

Lysael Stonebrook

Magistrate of Trade
Oversees market rights and guild charters in Southport. Judicious and fair—though whispers suggest he can be influenced for the right price.

Theren Stonebrook

City Surveyor
Maps trade routes throughout the kingdom, particularly along the River Vathoss between Gaeta and the port cities. Pragmatic and dependable.

Viriel Stonebrook

Court Herald
Keeps noble genealogies, pronounces edicts, and designs ceremonial pageantry at court. A collector of rumors as much as records.

Edrin Stonebrook

Master Falconer of the King’s Eyrie
A prestigious post blending hunting, art, and quiet espionage. Solitary, reserved, and deeply bonded to his birds.

Rowan Stonebrook

Scholar of the Royal Lyceum of Gaeta
Educated in law, history, and rhetoric. Brilliant, arrogant, and keenly aware of it.

Elira Stonebrook

Diplomatic Envoy
Handles sensitive negotiations and intelligence work in politically volatile regions. Clever, daring, and most like Bas in spirit.
