Description

Vincent Slag is tall, lean, and severe in posture, carrying himself with the quiet authority of someone accustomed to being obeyed—or at least listened to. His long black hair is worn loose or tied back simply, framing a face that is calm even when the situation is not.

He dresses plainly, favoring dark, practical clothing marked with subtle symbols of The Judge. His mace is kept clean and close at hand. When Vincent speaks, his voice is steady and deliberate, rarely raised, but difficult to ignore.

He looks like a man who expects the world to make sense—and is troubled when it does not.

Personality

Vincent is principled, disciplined, and deeply sincere. He believes that laws exist to protect people, not to empower tyrants, and that justice must be applied, not merely spoken.

He is:

  • Calm under pressure
  • Slow to anger
  • Uncomfortable with moral ambiguity
  • Willing to stand alone if he believes the law is on his side

Vincent does not enjoy violence—but he accepts it when judgment demands it.

Faith: The Judge

Vincent is an acolyte of The Judge, a deity of law, fairness, and consequence. He believes:

  • Law without compassion becomes tyranny
  • Mercy without law becomes chaos
  • Judgment must be rendered by those willing to bear its weight

He frequently invokes tolling bells, radiant words, and measured prayers—magic that feels less like fire and more like inevitability.

Backstory

Early Calling

Vincent was raised in Southport where trade law, naval regulation, and civic codes shape daily life. From a young age, he showed a fascination with rules—not as restrictions, but as promises. Promises that if followed, the world would be fair.

He entered service to The Judge not out of zealotry, but out of conviction. He trained as a legal acolyte, studying maritime law, contracts, and the doctrine of lawful authority.

Aboard The Sea Spray

Vincent signed onto The Sea Spray as both a chaplain and legal officer, responsible for:

  • Maintaining discipline
  • Settling disputes
  • Administering rites
  • Recording infractions and commendations

He believed the Navy was the highest lawful authority aboard ship—and therefore, that justice could be cleanly applied.

He was wrong.

The Wreck & After

When The Sea Spray was destroyed, Vincent’s understanding of law was tested immediately.

There was no captain.
No court.
No chain of command.

And yet, decisions still had to be made.

Vincent:

  • Repeatedly healed companions while under attack
  • Stood firm against monsters and bandits alike
  • Debated law and morality even when exhausted or wounded
  • Was dragged unconscious from water more than once, only to return to the fight

He found himself passing judgment without structure—guided only by conscience, faith, and necessity.

Moral Conflict

Vincent struggles with:

  • Lawless lands where no authority reigns
  • Groups who reject violence even when threatened
  • Allies who favor expedience over principle
  • The realization that sometimes justice does not look lawful

He debates openly. He questions decisions. He does not impose his will lightly—but once decided, he stands by it.

Habits & Quirks

  • Audibly debates legal doctrine with others
  • Keeps mental tallies of favors owed and debts unpaid
  • Uses bells and tolls in his spellcasting
  • Sleeps lightly, often in armor
  • Prefers clear answers, dislikes “it depends”

Relationships

  • Respects discipline and reliability
  • Tolerates chaos reluctantly
  • Holds quiet concern for those who burn too hot or too cold
  • Feels a growing responsibility toward his companions

Vincent did not seek leadership—but it keeps finding him.

Beliefs

  • Authority must be legitimate to be obeyed
  • Justice without fairness is cruelty
  • Mercy must be earned, but cruelty never is
  • Someone must be willing to decide

Vincent believes that if no law exists, one must be built.

Current Outlook

Vincent no longer believes the world is orderly.

He believes it can be—if enough people are willing to hold it together.

He intends to be one of them.
