Ooby the Goblin

“Ooby didn’t steal it. Ooby just… found it first.”

What People Know

Ooby is a goblin, which already makes him unusual in Strangeways. What makes him memorable is that he is cheerful, talkative, and seemingly incapable of malice. He appears where he shouldn’t, knows things he shouldn’t, and survives situations no one else would.

Most people describe him with a sigh, a pause, and then a reluctant smile.

Reputation

  • Annoying, but harmless

  • Untrustworthy, but honest (in his own way)

  • Somehow still alive

Guards chase him out of places.

Merchants yell at him.

Children adore him.

Personality

  • Fast-talking, fast-thinking, faster-running

  • Endlessly curious

  • Genuinely likes people—even when they’re mean to him

Ooby laughs at danger because he doesn’t fully understand why it scares others.

Behavior

  • Appears suddenly, usually from behind something

  • Collects objects with no clear value or purpose

  • Asks questions no one expects a goblin to ask

He has an uncanny sense for when to leave right now.

Relationship to the Party

Ooby likes the party. This is not conditional.

  • He trusts them instinctively

  • He will share information freely (though not always clearly)

  • He will absolutely get them into trouble without meaning to

If Ooby says someone is “bad-feeling,” he is usually right.

Rumors

  • Ooby has been to places no goblin should reach

  • He understands more languages than he admits

  • He knows hidden paths through Strangeways

  • Someone important once tried very hard to kill him—and failed
